Abstract


The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing job satisfaction of dental hygienists. Data was obtained from 147 Dental hygienists who were working at dental hospitals and private dental offices in Seoul, and at 25 health
centers in
Kyunggi-do. The data was obtained using self-administering questionnaires based on the Slavitt et al's index of work satisfaction from May 10th May 17th 1995. Frequence, t-test, ANOVA, Tukey's comparison analysis, multiple regression for
associations
and Cronbach's Alpha for reliability were used in analysis.
@ES The results were as follow:
@EN 1. The arithmetic mean of job satisfaction for the respondents is 3.0. While the 'Professional Status' factor has the highest satisfaction value 3.7 the 'Pay' factor has the lowest one 2.5.
2. The satisfaction score of graduates of junior colleges is higher than that of graduate technical institutes(P<0.05). The satisfaction score ranks first among respondents working in dental office, and ranks second among those working in health
center, and those working in dental hospital third ranks the last. The job satisfaction score of those who earn £Ü710,000 to £Ü800,000 per month is the highest, £Ü610,000 to £Ü700,000 second, £Ü800,000 or over the third, and £Ü600,000 below is
the
lowest(P<0.05).
3. The sociodemographic factors accounted for 13.2% of variance job satisfaction where the 'institutes' factor appears to influence job satisfaction statistically significantly (P<0.01).
It is the main finding of this study that the satisfaction score of the 'pay' factor is the lowest among studied factors and that the main factor influencing job satisfaction is the type of the dental hygienists' work. It is concluded that
improvement
of pay system and the continuing researches about other factors influencing job satisfaction are needed to increase the job satisfaction of dental hygienists.
